March 1 is the first day of spring in Romania. On this occasion Romanians make some kind of talismans which are named mărțișoare (this name comes from MARTIE, which means March). These mărțișoare are made from two strings – one is white (it's a symbol of the comming spring) and the other is red (symbol of winter). Formerly there used to be white and black strings.

People make these talismans or buy them in the stores and they give them to their friends and loved ones, because they believe it will bring them good luck and health.
According to folk beliefs, to ensure health and luck for the next twelve months, mărţişor should be worn close to the heart during March, and then attached to the fruit tree branch.
